Why maintenance is important?

Every weight loss treatment must have three parts:

1- Main treatment

2- Maintenance

3- Back to normal diet

There are many weight loss treatments in the market and most of them can do the job with satisfactory results. It is the maintenance part that makes that diet useful or useless. When you are dieting your body tries to adapt. This adaptation starts with reducing the metabolism rate and eventually results in lower capacity of burning food afterwards.

It means after every diet there is a period that body can not burn food effectively. This period last 3-4 weeks depends on the diet type. You must be really cautious in what you eat during that period.

The third and the last step needs a simple nutrition consultation for minor and major diet tweaks and basics of healthy eating as a normal person. If these three steps done perfectly you do not gain weight again. otherwise no matter how successful your weight loss was, you will gain what you lost. Unfortunately most treatment plans do not have a good maintenance program or do not stress on maintenance enough. As a result, there are many people that do the diet very well, but end up gaining weight very fast. So have this in mind: ask your practitioner about the maintenance part and make sure that it works.
